Home _ Discover Grand Poitiers _ Lusignan
Welcome to Lusignan. 20 km south-west of Poitiers, go through the fortified gateway to discover the historic town, its 15th century half-timbered houses and the remains of feudal castles. The narrow streets have kept their medieval layout.
Listed as a Historic Monument, the 1853 covered market is attractive thanks to its magnificent wooden structure. From the promenade of Blossac, you can enjoy an exceptional panorama of the Vonne Valley. Founded in the 11th century by the Lord of Lusignan, the Romanesque church in the shape of a Latin cross was redesigned after the Hundred Years' War. Outside, a sculpture by Mélusine decorates the chevet. Travel between history and mythology during your visit to Lusignan: home of the Lords of Lusignan, kings of Cyprus, Jerusalem and Armenia and city of the Melusine Fairy, a legendary character with a snake's tail and mother of the Lusignan lineage.
Five kilometres from Lusignan, don't miss the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church in Jazeneuil for its rich ornamentation and contemporary stained glass windows. Under this little marvel of Romanesque art, a spring flows into the neighbouring wash-house. A charming bucolic trio! On foot, by bike, on horseback or even by canoe, the green Vonne valley is ideal for walks. Numerous GR, marked trails and even the Way of Saint James of Compostela criss-cross the area. The highlight of this green recital is the bewitching Saint-Sauvant state forest.
